I’m sure most of the country was caught up with the Grey Cup Game on November 27. It’s Canada’s Super Bowl, after all. But it wasn’t the only game in town. While the Lions and Bombers were butting heads in Vancouver, the local Rogers community channel was showing a CCAA women’s volleyball match between host Humber (yes, I did go there) and Canadore. I tried to watch, but the commen- tating quickly got the better of me.
So, a word to those broadcasting volleyball - let the match be the star. To quote one announcer (who repeated himself over and over), “For sure, for sure.”
Lots of good stuff this issue, our eighth, highlighted by our Pan American Games and Para Pan Am Games coverage. Our man Steve Delaney was on the scene in Mexico with some great stories to tell.
Other highlights include Trinity Western tangling with the sport’s elite over in Qatar and the men’s and women’s World Cups in Japan. Canada didn’t have teams there, but we were hoping for better from Cuba and the States. Both came up short in the men’s event, hurting our Olympic chances.
Our women got some bad news recently, too, as NORCECA’s Olympic Quali- fication Tournament has been postponed until at least April as Mexican organiz- ers have been experiencing financial difficulties. Many of our women had stayed home to prepare for the event, so now they will seek employment overseas.
On a positive note, our National Championships are just around the corner, and Volleyball Canada’s got something special cooked up for 2012 – for the first time, all the matches will take place under one roof! Details are inside.
We’ve also got late-season beach action and a look ahead to 2012. You’ll get up close and personal with rising beach star and Source contributor Maverick Hatch, too. Freeballs is back and there’s some great advice for those who are actively
