CIS Playoffs: Sunday February 20th

Sunday is another full day of CIS Playoff competition. There is the potential for four champions to be crowned in their respective leagues, and other teams have a chance to move on to the semis. Soon we'll know which teams will be competing for the CIS Championships, deciding the single best teams for university volleyball in the entire nation. Last years men's champions, Calgary, are still in contention, while the women are already guaranteed to see a fresh face this year.

After a break yesterday, the RSEQ picks up again with the second matches of their men's and women's best of threes. Laval won for both the men and the women, dropping only one set between them. Today, we will likely be able to confirm that Laval is once again the best volleyball team in the entire province of Quebec.

The AUS also are entering the second match of their best of three series that will crown a champion for the men. The first match went to five sets, so there is a good chance we'll be forced into a third game in the series. As it sits now, UNB leads Dalhousie 1-0. For the women, the quarter-finals were played on Friday, and yesterday the semis were held. Saint Mary's beat down St. FX without dropping a set, and UNB handed Dalhousie a 3-1 loss. The two will compete today to decide the AUS 2011 Champion.

One match was forced into a third game out West, as Brandon fought off Manitoba last night with their backs to the wall. They'll play again today to decide who moves on to the semis. Two CanadaWest powerhouses, Calgary and Trinity Western, had no problems ripping through their opponents. Calgary beat UBC 3-1, and Trinity Western handled Thompson Rivers without losing a set in either of the two matches. For the women, the CanadaWest semi-finals were decided last night. Manitoba beat Brandon, and Alberta moved on with a win over Calgary. Every single quarter-final was won in a two-game sweep. The rest of the semi-finals will be contested next weekend, starting February 25th, 2011.

Last night was a huge night for both the men and women in OUA playoff competition. All quarter-final matches have now been played, and the semi-finals and finals will be fought for next weekend over a two day period. The semis are on Friday February 25th, and the finals the next day, the 26th. The results of last night's competition went as follows:

Men:

The two teams will meet in one semi-final, while Guelph will meet Western in the other.

Women:

On February 25th, York and Western will play in one semi-final, while Ottawa and Guelph will decide the other representative moving on to the finals.
