USA: Speraw named as Head Coach
USA Volleyball has finally named the head coach of their men's indoor national team. From the USAV website:
John Speraw, a two-time Olympic assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team, has been named the program’s head coach for the next Olympic Games quadrennial culminating at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, USA Volleyball Chief Executive Officer Doug Beal announced on Monday.
Speraw, 41, will also continue as the head men’s volleyball coach at UCLA in a dual role with the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team. He accepted the head job at his alma mater in June 2012 and is completing his first campaign with the Bruins.
Speraw was an assistant to former head coach Alan Knipe at the 2012 Olympic Games where the US men finished fifth. An interesting note here is that Speraw will be continuing his role at UCLA consecutively with his new national team position. That will definitely be a lot of work.
Is it an advantage or a disadvantage to hold two full time coaching gigs at one time? I wonder how The UCLA Athletics department feels about their recent hire taking this position. Next Monday expect Mike Sondheimer to comment on this hire on his weekly segment on The Net Live.
