OVA Grand Slam
The Ontario Volleyball Association has announced the addition of it's first annual Grand Slam event scheduled June 28th-30th at Ashbridges Bay.
A total of $8,000, $4,000 per gender, will be award at the inaugural Grand Slam, with the Champions walking away with a cool $2,000.
The event will feature an enclosed show court where 16 of top teams will face off in the Main Draw.
The top nine (9) OVA Senior teams will be invited to compete, and they will be joined by two (2) Domestic Wildcards (the top teams from other provinces), one (1) International Wildcard (a team competing on either the NORCECA or FIVB tour).
Four teams will also qualify through a Qualifier, which will take place on Friday June 28th.
Saturday the 29th will feature pool play, with pools of four facing off, and the top two from each pool advancing to Sunday's single-elimination Playoff Round.
The tournament will feature some of the best talent in Canada, as the new FIVB points system make it difficult to maintain a consistent spot on the tour, and the NORCECA Tour has only one scheduled event between now and August.
With the majority of the players in the National Team program living and training in Toronto, the majority of them will be playing on the OVA Tour, and will eligible for one of the nine primary spots.
While this event is still far from being the top event in Canada, the Vancouver Open offers $7,500 per gender, it does have the potential to grow exponentially in the next few years.
With this addition of a second (third if you count Kelowna's Center of Gravity) "Pro" event, we're hoping this a trend that other provinces (or city's) are going to pick up.
