Canada Games: Ontario vs. Manitoba, BC vs. Quebec in Semi-Finals

One of BC's McNamara twins battles at the net with Hillary Monette of Nova Scotia in quarterfinal play

The semi-finals are set, with BC facing off against Quebec, and Ontario will be taking on Manitoba, in both the men’s and women’s tournament.

The first semi-final will go down at 2:00 p.m. EST today, with Quebec and British Columbia facing off in a pool play rematch on the women’s side, while in men’s action we will see another pool play rematch with Manitoba meeting Ontario.

The second set of semi-finals will feature those same provinces, just reversed. Ontario will take on Manitoba, while British Columbia and Quebec will meet once again. These matches will be featured at 3:00 p.m. EST.

On the men’s side, with Ontario and Quebec solidifying their place in the semi-finals, Manitoba faced-off against Alberta in the quarterfinals in a barnburner that went the limit. Although dropping the first 21-19, Manitoba fought hard to keep their medal hopes alive, in what may have been the most exciting set of the tournament, finally prevailing at 28-26. They started the 3rd set with a 3-0 run, and never looked back, solidifying their rematch against Ontario with a 15-11 win.

The other semi-final was a much more casual affair, with Quebec, powered by a favorable home crowd, bowled over Saskatchewan with a thorough 21-10, 21-15 win.

In female action, both teams, British Columbia and Manitoba, managed to place themselves in the medal round fairly easily. Defending Gold medalists BC faced off against Nova Scotia, taking the match 21-16, 21-12. This pits them against Quebec, who they lost too yesterday in pool play.

In the final quarterfinal match-up, Manitoba played a steady ball control game to take the match 21-11, 21-17 over Alberta.

The eight teams competing in the semi-finals will have a day off tomorrow, while the medal matches will be played on Saturday, August 17th,  and will be featured live on TSN2.
