Bundesliga: No Power for Düren Against Friedrichshafen
Sometimes power volleying isn’t enough. That was the case Wednesday afternoon when SWD Powervolleys Düren were defeated 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-17) by VfB Friedrichshafen in Bundesliga action. Düren, which features Canadians Ciaran McGovern, Blair Bann and Steven Hunt, battled hard but in the end were unable to take a set off the first place Friedrichshafen.
Ciaran McGovern got the start for Düren at setter. Though often exposed as a short blocker, McGovern ran the offense for 31 kills, one of which was his own. Blair Bann quarterbacked the defence from the Libero position passing a team high 67% with 42% perfection. Steven Hunt didn’t dress for the match. Both McGovern and Bann have seen time with Canada’s National Team.
Max Günthör was dominant in the middle for Friedrichshafen putting up 16 points on eight kills, six blocks and two aces. Düren’s middles had no solution for the 6’8” German. Despite the effort from Günthör, setter Simon Tischer was named player of the game for Friedrichshafen. Outside hitter Matthias Pompe was player of the game for Düren. He scored nine points off seven kills, one block, and one ace.
Düren drops to 7-6 on the season and are currently in fifth place. Friedrichshafen moves to 12-1 and sits at the top of the Bundesliga regular season standings.
