FIVB: Canadians Off to Semis In Japan
While the bad luck continues for Canadian volleyball here at home, our teams on the other side of the world are seeing a much different side of things, as two teams have moved on to the medal rounds at the Yokohama Grand Slam in Japan.
Sarah Pavan (Kitchener, ON) and Heather Bansley (Waterdown, ON) are still searching for that illusive Gold medal, and will get another shot at one tonight after a 15-21, 21-15, 15-10 win over Fernanda/Lima of Brazil.
Pavan/Bansley have two silvers and a bronze so far this season, but will have to face World Champions Barbara/Agatha if they want another shot at top spot.
Chaim Schalk (Red Deer, AB) and Ben Saxton (Calgary, AB) are Canada's fourth team to reach the Top Four of a FIVB event this summer, another record for Canadian beach volleyball. For a team who have been so close on any occasions, this first venture into the semi-finals is made all the more important by who they had to eat to get there. The pair from Alberta defeated the Top Ranked Nummerdor/Varenhorst in the quarters- 21-19, 21-13.
Next up are Russians Semenov/Krasilnikov, a tough-team who's also cracking the medal rounds for the first time this year. Last time they made it past quarters was in 2014 at home at the Moscow Grand Slam, where they took him the Gold.
Live Streams
There's still a lack of an official live stream for the FIVB World Tour, but that doesn't mean you can't watch! The streams can be watched free online from German website Sportdeutschland.tv. You have to have a German IP address to watch, but if you take a gander at the video to the right, we can teach you how to do just that.
