FIVB: 2011 Club World Championships

Fivb club

The FIVB Club World Championships take place this year from October 8th - 14th in Doha, Qatar.  NORCECA has chosen Canada to represent our region in Qatar on the men's side of the tournament.  Without a pro league in Canada, the highest level of organized competitive indoor volleyball is the CIS.  The Spartans from Trinity Western University have been chosen as the team to represent NORCECA at this tournament.  Here is a exerpt from the FIVB website:

Canada is in Pool A alongside Russia’s Zenit Kazan, Poland’s KS Jastrzebski Wegiel and last year’s bronze medallists, Iran’s Paykan.  The Spartans are well aware of the challenge that lies ahead of them, but coach Ben Josephson said the tournament is the opportunity of a lifetime for many of his players.

“Now, we are going to be able to give our players a visual of what it takes to be a great international player, not just a great CIS player,” he said.

2011 CEV Champions League Finals Nearing

The CEV Champions League provides the highest level of professional volleyball in the world today.

The 2011 CEV Champions League is coming closer and closer to naming a champion. The hosts for the final four tournaments have been named, guaranteeing a men’s and women’s team a spot among the four.

Of course, the CEV Champions League isn’t really dinner table conversation for most families. The closest comparison in professional sports would be the Champions League of soccer. The design has many individual national leagues coming together to determine a World Champion of professional Volleyball. As with soccer, some leagues consistently put forward the heavy favourites. For soccer it’s the Spanish Primiera, the English Premier League. For Volleyball the favourites come from Italy, Russia, and Turkey.
