OCAA Championship Tournament Begins Thursday

It's been a full season of competition for Ontario colleges, and now it's time to crown a single champion for the men and women. The format of their finals looks more like a weekend tournament than a playoff bracket. Starting on Thursday, eight teams will remain in each category, and will play a quarter-final match up. The winners of Thursday's event will play the semi-finals on Friday, and the eventual gold medal match will be decided on Saturday, February 26th.

The men will compete at Seneca College in Toronto. Their quarter-finals look like this, all being played in the Newnham Gymnasium at Seneca:

2:00 pm EST Redeemer Royals vs. Sheridan Bruins

4:00 pm EST Mohawk Mountaineers vs. Durham Lords

6:00 pm EST Nipissing Lakers vs. Humber Hawks

8:00 pm EST Fanshawe Falcons vs. Seneca Sting

All of last year's medalists are still in contention. Humber will look to defend their 2009-10 OCAA title, while last years second and third place, Seneca and Redeemer respectively, will look to dethrone them.

The women's bracket will be contested at Loyalist College in Belleville.Their bracket looks like this:

1:00 pm EST Sheridan Bruins vs. Nipissing Lakers

3:00 pm EST Mohawk Mountaineers vs. Trent Excalibur

5:00 pm EST Fanshawe Falcons vs. Cambrian Golden Shield

7:00 pm EST Loyalist Lancers vs. Humber Hawks

The Humber Hawks generally win it all, and they'll be hungry to do it again with this being Landis Doyle's final year of eligibility. Nipissing and Mohawk, who are year after year in second and third, both remain in contention. None of those three teams are in direct competition in the quarter-finals, and so could sweep the medals once again.
