UNB Claim Multiple AUS Championships

The University of New Brunswick has something to brag about after a stellar weekend of volleyball out East. First, their men's squad deal with Dalhousie in a best of three series. Though it wasn't easy, going to five sets in both games, UNB managed to claim victory without having to go to a third match. Dalhousie had won 24 straight AUS Championships on the men's side of things, and 30 of the last 31. UNB claims their first AUS Championship since the 1978-79 season. Now the UNB squad will attempt to make a mark on the national scale, going to Langley on March 4th to compete.

For the women, UNB fought throught a tough tournament bracket to claim their championship. After an impressive regular season, they earned themselves a bye through the quarter-finals on Friday. On Saturday, they dealth with Dalhousie in a 3-1 win. On Sunday, they destroyed the defending champions, Saint Mary's, 3-0. The win earned them the title of AUS Champions. The women out East are far more competitive than the men, and no team has won three-straight championships in the last decade. UNB won the title three years ago, and will now try to capitalize on this season's success in the CIS Championships.

The only two leagues in the CIS that have finished, the AUS and RSEQ, both were won by the same university for both men and women. Laval and UNB have proven that their program is capable of establishing great teams. I'm excited to see how each team does come the first weekend in March.
