Binstock and Reader Partners for 2012

Photo: Martin Reader

Our Canadian beach volleyball athletes have started their training for the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour and there are some new partnerships representing our country.  Martin Reader and Josh Binstock will be competing together this upcoming year on the tour and the road to the Olympic Games.  Here is what Martin had to say about his new partnership with Josh and about his (now) former partner Chaim Schalk:

I am very pleased to announce to that I will be competing on the 2012 FIVB tour as well as qualify for the Olympic games with Sir Josh Binstock. This is a move that may surprise some of you, especially after winning the 2011 Continental Cup with Chaim Schalk. To those skeptics, Chaim and I definitely had a good run but over the span of 2 seasons we weren't able to put together our best performances at more than a few events. Granted we both dealt with injuries (the most recent and severe being my back) but there were plenty of opportunities to step up and we never found a strong enough rhythm to consistently improve our results. I thank Chaim for a very memorable 2 years but this isn't a blog about the past, it is about the exciting future for a team that has been destined to happen for a long time!

Martin also just released a video over on his YouTube channel.  Check out the video after the jump.

FIVB: Phuket Open

Fivb phuket

Sadly, that time has come.  The final event of the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour is here and we must start to say goodbye to the warm sand.  The final event of the tour this year is a women's only event set in Phuket, Thailand.  The Phuket Thailand Open will take place from November 1st - 6th, 2011 and Canada is sending four teams to close of the tour.  Returning to Thailand to better their 9th place finish from last year, Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney are the highest ranked Canadian team and have enough entry points this tournament to get a direct entry into the main draw.  Behind them are Marie-Andrée Lessard and Annie Martin who have had a little bit of a disappointing season starting out with 860 points in their first event of the summer and direct main draw entries for their first four events.  Team Lessard-Martin (now with only 320 entry points) will now have to go through the qualification part of the tournament.  The remaining two Canadian duos that will be joining Annie and Marie in the qualification round are Victoria Altomare and Caleigh Whitaker and the team of Jamie Lynn Broder and Kristina Valjas.

As always check back to Kill on Two for results, live streams, matches and anything else we can find.

Just when you thought that The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour was done for the season, you remember about the fall events.  I must admit, I was already making my transition into indoor and getting ready for the startup of NCAA, CIS and CEV volleyball when I remembered these last couple FIVB beach events.  This week (October 4th - 9th) the men conclude their 2011 tour with the last stop in Agadir, Morocco.  I know some of the Canadian men's teams had planned on going to Morocco, but the current registered teams list on fivb.org doesn't show any registered yet.  Anyways, here are some teams to lookout for.

The 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Junior World Championships starts today in Halifax, Nova Scotia and will run until September 4th.  Canada was chosen to host this year's event due to Garret May and Sam Schachter winning the gold medal last year in Turkey.  Garret is back this year with a new partner, Danny Demyanenko.  On the women's side of the tournament, recent bronze medalists at the 2011 Canadian National Beach Volleyball Championship Melissa Humana-Paredes and Victoria Altomare are also in Halifax with a direct main draw entry.  Due to Canada hosting as well as previous finishes, every Canadian team on the men's and women's side of the tournament will begin in the main draw.  Main Draw action starts on September 1st.  Check out the links below for live streaming video information.
