Some unfortunate news for the York University Lions Women's Volleyball program. The CIS ruled on an OUA sanctioned forfeit of the squad's last match, an OUA quarter final game against RMC. The OUA had ruled the match a forfeit because The Lions had played transfer player Michelle Pierce. Pierce was a transfer player from The Windsor Lancers and as a transfer player, had to sit out a full year. Pierce did sit out the full year, that is not the violation being questioned. The violation committed is that every player that plays in a playoff match has to have played in or at least dressed for at least one regular season game. Because Pierce had to sit out a full year, she missed dressing for a regular season game by - two days.
York led the OUA for the entire season finishing with a record of 16-2 and they did this without the game play of Michelle Pierce. Both the transfer and the playoff roster rules seem fair. Rules like this are common in sports at both the professional and collegiate level. These rules are designed to help maintain balance and fairness when one player leaves one team to play for another. But there is something about this story that seems unfair.

Women's games after the break.
OUA
With the departure of Laurier from CIS men's and women's volleyball, the OUA has now folded both divisions into one massive 13 team conference. At the top of the OUA is the York University Lions. Undefeated in nine games, the Lions have only dropped three sets this season. Even getting locked in an elevator for just under and hour right before they walked on the court didn't phase them as they defeated the OUA second place team, Ottawa by a score of 3-1. Ottawa sits in a little pack of three teams fighting out for the second spot of the OUA with a record of 7-3. The other two teams fighting it out with Ottawa are Queen's (6-2) and Toronto (6-3). U of T is showing quite the improvement from last year when they finished the regular season with a record of 5-14.

Queen’s Gaels vs. York Lions
The Men’s OUA season is winding down, with only a couple games left for each team in the regular season. Only seven teams make the Men’s playoffs, and there is a large build-up of teams fighting for the final spot. The York Lions are one of those teams. Laurier sits in the last playoff spot, but Ryerson and Toronto both are between the Lions and that seventh place. On Sunday, they came up against one of the OUA’s strongest teams in the Queen’s Gaels. If they wanted to prove themselves, this was one of their final opportunities.
The game started quickly, as Queen’s enforced their blocking game early. Gaels’ 13 Michael Amoroso, while solidifying the middle block, also came through with a powerful quick early on. York responded with their own middle, 2 Felipe Humana-Paredes, hitting a quick right back.

Queen's Gael's vs. York Lions
On Sunday February 6th, the Queen’s Gaels and York Lions met to decide the top of the Women’s OUA. Going in, York had a slight advantage. However, if Queen’s were to win then the two teams would sport the exact same record with only a week left before playoffs. This was a clash of OUA powerhouses, and will likely be a preview to these teams meeting later in the playoff season.
Before the game, the York Lions honoured their graduating players. Their captain, 10 Sarah Sutton, and also 14 Sarah Holloway were both presented flowers and a framed recognition of their accomplishments. The incredible thing is that Holloway began her university career on the York basketball team before deciding to entirely change her athletic path. After the kind ceremony, the games got underway.

Full recap and scores after the jump:On the men's side of the OUA, the fight for playoffs is a little more exciting. Teams are still fighting for playoff spots, while the top four have separated from the pack. Its looking like Western is going to hold onto the first seed and get themselves a bye into the second round leaving the remaining six teams to fight it out on February 19th in the OUA Quarter Finals.

More after the jump. This weekend saw the OUA make the final turn onto the home stretch of the regular season in women's volleyball. With only two weeks of games remaining, playoff spots are almost completely locked in. York, Queen's and Ottawa have secured playoff spots. Although home court advantage is far from locked with two points separating these first three teams, the real fight in the east division is for the fourth and final playoff spot.
RMC and Toronto are both tied with 10 points after this weekend. Toronto has three games remaining to RMC's four. Whoever wins the most games from here on in will secure the final playoff spot in the OUA east. Both teams play their final regular season game on February 13th.
