Some unfortunate news for the York University Lions Women's Volleyball program. The CIS ruled on an OUA sanctioned forfeit of the squad's last match, an OUA quarter final game against RMC. The OUA had ruled the match a forfeit because The Lions had played transfer player Michelle Pierce. Pierce was a transfer player from The Windsor Lancers and as a transfer player, had to sit out a full year. Pierce did sit out the full year, that is not the violation being questioned. The violation committed is that every player that plays in a playoff match has to have played in or at least dressed for at least one regular season game. Because Pierce had to sit out a full year, she missed dressing for a regular season game by - two days.
York led the OUA for the entire season finishing with a record of 16-2 and they did this without the game play of Michelle Pierce. Both the transfer and the playoff roster rules seem fair. Rules like this are common in sports at both the professional and collegiate level. These rules are designed to help maintain balance and fairness when one player leaves one team to play for another. But there is something about this story that seems unfair.

We're heading into the home stretch of the CIS volleyball season with this week being the second last week of the regular season. Lots of schools are having their senior nights as they say goodbye to graduating players, many of whom will be playing high level volleyball for the last time. When I launched Kill on Two just over a year ago my intention was to create one central location where a volleyball fan could find information, scores, videos and news about volleyball in Canada and around the world. Today I came across a three part video documentary series on The Windsor Lancers Men's Volleyball program. This video is exactly like the kind of videos I imagined creating when I started the site. It has great production value, showcases our sport and (most importantly) it is good. It is an enjoyable watch. Maybe I'm biased because I love the sport of volleyball, but chances are that if you are reading this post you do too. If you haven't already, do so now.

Photo: RyersonRams.caOn the men's side of the OUA, the fight for playoffs is a little more exciting. Teams are still fighting for playoff spots, while the top four have separated from the pack. Its looking like Western is going to hold onto the first seed and get themselves a bye into the second round leaving the remaining six teams to fight it out on February 19th in the OUA Quarter Finals.

Photo: Cameron Dunlop, McMaster AthleticsThis weekend saw the OUA make the final turn onto the home stretch of the regular season in women's volleyball. With only two weeks of games remaining, playoff spots are almost completely locked in. York, Queen's and Ottawa have secured playoff spots. Although home court advantage is far from locked with two points separating these first three teams, the real fight in the east division is for the fourth and final playoff spot.
RMC and Toronto are both tied with 10 points after this weekend. Toronto has three games remaining to RMC's four. Whoever wins the most games from here on in will secure the final playoff spot in the OUA east. Both teams play their final regular season game on February 13th.

York Excalibur Tournament Bronze Medal Match
Windsor Lancers vs. York Lions
After tough losses to UNB and Western respectively, the Windsor Lancers and York Lions met to decide who would take home some hardware. Both of these teams were familiar with each other after years of playing in the OUA. The bronze medal would be decided on who cared more to fight for it after the deflation of losing a chance at gold and silver. This match would also set the tone for the OUA season, set to resume in a week’s time.
The Excalibur Classic continues today at York University.Day two of the Excalibur Classic brings an end to pool play and continues with playoffs. After the very surpirsing results of Day one, these eight teams will hit the court again to play their last pool play match at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.. Starting at 3:30 p.m. we have the first round of playoffs, starting with the consolation semifinal matches. The championship semifinal matches will take place at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

York University. Photo: WikipediaThe annual York University Lion's Excalibur Tournament begins today up at the YorkU Keele Campus. With last year's winner, Laval, not in attendance, the championship will be undefended. Teams from the OUA, AUS, RSEQ and Japan will compete over the next three days. The teams attending the tournament are: York, Western, Windsor, Ryerson, Montreal, Sherbrooke, UNB and Budo.
